Eligibility and Requirements

Technology Start-up Visa (D-8-4)

The technology start-up visa is issued in accordance with the D-8-4 stay management guidelines (Nov. '24) under the points-based system or points exemption. Those who meet at least one required item and score 60 points or more out of 300 (after satisfying eligibility criteria in advance) may have their stay status changed or extended. Initially issued for one year, it may be extended annually while conducting business.

Legally staying foreigners who wish to start a technology-based business in Korea

Eligibility Criteria

A corporate founder who holds intellectual property rights or equivalent technical capability and meets one of: (1) an associate degree or higher obtained in Korea, (2) a bachelor's degree or higher obtained abroad, or (3) recommendation by the head of the relevant central administrative agency (no education requirement).

Permit Criteria
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from Korea, a bachelor's degree or higher from abroad, or be recommended by the head of the relevant central administrative agency (only already-obtained degrees are recognized; expected degrees are excluded).
  • Technology start-up visa points system 60 or more out of 300 (with at least one required item) or points exemption (e.g., K-Startup Grand Challenge award, Startup Korea special visa screening committee recommendation).
  • The applicant must have directly incorporated a company in the field related to the 'required item(s)' they have obtained, and completed corporate registration and business registration (new incorporation only; acquisition of existing corporations is not eligible).
